| 4-C |
4-C is a wonderful, non-profit group of dedicated people that is a privilege
to work with, most notably at our blockbuster Kevin Henkes signing
in 2006. From their website: 4-C is a source for resources and information
about issues affecting children and families. 4C promotes the positive
development of all children, especially those in out-of-home learning
environments. The mission of 4C is to improve the effectiveness
and accessibility of early childhood education in Southwestern Ohio
& Northern Kentucky. Well said. C 4 yourself!

| The
Cincinnati Zoo |
We
love working/playing with the Cincinnati Zoo. Not
only do they provide wondrous habitat for our favorite species (hint:
rhymes with can o' tea), they are an amazing resource for families
throughout the region. With so many books to read, we also have
short attention spans, and are thus ardent fans of Ninety Second
Naturalist Thane Maynard, who has been generous enough to inhabit
our store several times over the years. Check their site for attractions
new and old, and tell them (rhymes with: shoe can o' tea) sent you

and Reggie Harris |
The official site for Kim and Reggie Harris, who
we were thrilled to have in our store in February, 2002, (view photo)
singing and teaching about the Underground Railroad during Black
History Month. Their music is uplifting and engaging for kids from
all backgrounds, and they are downright fabulous people.

| Highlands
Nature Sanctuary |
For
all tired or over-stimulated souls yearning for respite from the
bustle of the city, the bustle of the suburbs, or the general bustle
prevalent in the world today (independent bookstores named for marine
mammals exempted from bustledom), Highlands Nature Sanctuary is for you. Located only 90 minutes east of Cincinnati, Highlands
is a 2300 (and growing) acre oasis of hope in some of Ohio’s
last remaining wilderness (and recovering wilderness). Caves, old-growth
forest, wetlands, native grassland, rare native species (barn owls,
fox, hawk, coyotes), and more, overseen by some of our favorite
people. A wonderful choice for a weekend retreat (their bed and
breakfasts serve excellent organic food) or educational jaunt (classes
and hikes offered by reservation), and a worthy cause to support.

| Imago
Earth Center! |
One
of our favorite places, a 16 acre oasis on Cincinnati’s west
side. Imago Earth Center serves tens of thousands
of kids every year via camps, special programs, and school visits.
Many of the kids they serve have little or no access to nature,
making their work even more valuable. We are fortunate to host them
every month for interactive and inspiring
nature programs (see events
for upcoming ones), including songs, stories, and oft-fuzzy-creepy-crawly
touchables. Excellent people, an excellent mission, and an excellent
place to visit.

| Planet
Esmè! |
A
wonderful resource for teachers, librarians, and all lovers of reading,
chock full of detailed book reviews and pro-literacy pointers. Esmè
Raji Codell is a former elementary school teacher from
Chicago, an authority on children's literature, and one of the most
engaging, hilarious, in-demand speakers working/playing today. She's
also an excellent writer, author of numerous best-sellers including
the classic, Educating Esmè: Diary of a Teacher's First
Year. We were fortunate enough to host Esmè at blue
manatee in 2005 (view photo
1 and photo 2)
for an ribbeting presentation of her novel, Diary of a Fairy
Godmother. You'll love her planet.

| Justin
Roberts |
Justin Roberts is the Chicago-based, award-winning
singer-sonwriter who packs venues across the country. We were privileged
to have him for an in-store event in May, 2003 (view photo
1 and photo 2).
Justin is an ex-Montessori teacher and life-long musician, who is
not only passionate about his work and fun to listen to (guaranteed
to not drive us parents crazy on long car trips), but he truly,
really, gets it. His interactive website features audio, video,
links, and other great stuff.
