We're starting off the holiday season on November 9th at 5pm, with a signing of the new book, A Nutty Nutcracker Christmas! Author and playwright G. Riley Mills will be in the store to discuss, sign, and lead a writer's workshop for our young aspiring authors!
This is the story of the Nutcracker, only it's told from the perspective of Fritz! The traditional Nutcracker tale gets turned on its head in this rollicking Christmas adventure, based on the hit musical A Nutty Nutcracker Christmas by the popular family music rock star Ralph Covert and playwright G. Blue Manatee Bookstore is starting a new book club geared specifically towards girls ages 10-12. Together with Kiki Magazine, we are hoping to create an environment for smart, empowered girls who also happen to love reading! This November we will be reading Theater Shoes by Noel Streatfeild! We will be incorporating Kiki Magazine's retro themed issue by following the story of three impoverished orphans living with their eccentric grandmother in WWII era London. Join us on Nov. 22 to discuss this book as a group and act out!

Fall is here. That means that Oakley After Hours is winding down. We are celebrating the last Oakley After Hours of the season this Friday! The store will be open until 9pm, and we are going to have a special music time with Miss Meghan! Stop by the store and look around, grab a coffee at the cafe, and end the season on a high note!
Have you ever wondered how a book goes from idea to its final version? Join us on August 29th from 1-2pm, and learn from both a writer and an illustrator about the processes that are involved in the creation of a work. Christina Wald, a local illustrator will show us her original sketches, and even do a drawing demonstration at the store! She will be joined by Scotti Cohn, who will take us a journey of the research she did to write One Wolf Howls. After the program, the ladies will stay around to sign their works.
In The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins each district from the Capitol must send one girl and one boy to participate in the Hunger Games. In District 12, Katniss and Peeta are chosen to go to the games, in which they will fight to the death and only one winner will stand.
Now in Catching Fire, the much awaited second book in the Hunger Games Trilogy, the outcome of the games will continue to play out. Be sure to read The Hunger Games (if you haven't already) before Catching Fire releases September 1st, 2009 (stop by our release event at the store the same day). Once you start reading, you will not be able to stop!
It's one of our favorite times of the month as we here in Oakley extend our hours, and provide fun and entertainment for all. Stop by the blue manatee from 7-7:30 for a sing-a-long with Miss Katie and friends. We will also be open until 9pm this evening as well (and the cafe for that evening coffee/tea/smoothie craving)! Gardens with Wings is a great place to find out all the information you need; from what butterflies you will be attracting, how to make your own garden, and even identifying butterflies. We are lucky that they are a local friend (based out of Northern Kentucky) and resource!Â

Youth literary arts troupe and Scripps-Corbett Award winner Writers of Outstanding Words (WOW) will be signing a compilation book of their summer session. This year over 100 children from as far as Houston, Texas practiced the craft of fine art, writing, and quilting which all culminated into this wonderful book.

Well, Black Swallowtail Waystation. The monarchs are still on their way but the Eastern Black Swallowtails found us and we have 2 caterpillars ready to become butterflies. As I was leaving today, one looked as if he/ she was ready for her 2 week nap to become a butterfly. They eat and eat and EAT some more then rest. You remember the Very Hungry Caterpillar, Right? (substitute Bronze Fennel for Ice Cream). I will keep you posted. If you stop by, they are on the Bronze Fennel (their host plant) by the garbage cans. Please look at them ONLY with your eyes. They are very busy EATING.
