To our friends and customers:
After 28 amazing years in our beloved literary ecosystem, the time for change has arrived. Faced with the ever-challenging ecology of brick-and-mortar book selling, we must adapt and evolve. We are grateful to our loyal customers for your positive energies, story time zeal, and support of independent businesses that make communities like Oakley special. Without you, our mission to provide a sanctuary of imagination and togetherness for children and families celebrating the ritual of reading would not be possible. It is this mission that inspired my wife Sandy and me to revive and reinvent the former Blue Marble in 2001, and fueled by the same passion we will do so again, joined by an amazing and dedicated team of booksellers and ManaTeers, many of whom have been with us through changes massive and mini.
And so...with a combination of ennui and excitement, we officially announce that blue manatee is not closing, but moving! Like our role models, real manatees, the move is mellow, literally just upriver, to a brand new building at 3094 Madison, next to our friends at Sleepy Bee Cafe. In this reimagined space, we plan to redouble our focus on providing the best in children's books hand-picked by experts in children's literature and early brain development, hands-on "unplugged" toys and creative/cuddly things, in a truly unique, magical space for children and their grownups. Given a smaller footprint, events will be meaningful and energized yet intimate (some involving delicious food nearby), and in collaboration with community partners.
We appreciate your support and positivity during this difficult process, and look forward to adventures and successes to come. We also express a most heartfelt thank you to our neighbors on Kids Row, especially our longtime, kindly landlord, the Aglamesis family. We will miss you! Questions are welcome at email@example.com, and again, thank you for supporting independent bookstores and the mission of shared reading.
Dr. John Hutton, ManateeMD
P.S. Yes, we will be preserving the autograph walls. :)

Every year the National Education Association (NEA) celebrates reading and Dr. Seuss’s birthday by hosting Read Across America, a day to promote reading motivation and awareness. Read Across America, the largest celebration of reading across the country, is the perfect reason to gather together at blue manatee to read some Dr. Seuss favorites! While we're at it, let's make our very own red and white stovepipe hats, just like the Cat in the Hat! Upon finishing our hats, we'll enjoy a tasty treat - red fish, blue fish, anyone?

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if your pet had thumbs? One thing that sets humans apart from many other species on the planet is an opposable thumb. It allows us to do many things that other creatures can't do. What kind of mischief would our pets get into if they could open doors, open containers, or turn on the tv? Join us today as we read a few of our favorite pet books and then we'll create a "thumb-tastic" piece of artwork! Get ready to get your thumbs a bit messy!
